"The term Global Health stands for a new context, a new awareness and a new strategic approach in matters of international health. Its focus is the impact of global interdependence on the determinants of health, the transfer of health risks and the policy response of countries, international organizations and the many other actors in the global health arena. Its goal is the equitable access to health in all regions of the globe."

For the first time, a joint The Lancet & Financial Times Commission entitled Growing up in a digital world: Governing health futures 2030 explored the convergence of digital health, artificial intelligence (AI) and other frontier technologies with universal health coverage (UHC) to support attainment of the third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). In particular, the Commission provided recommendations on:

  • integrated digital development that improves the health and well-being of children and young people in an ever more digital world.
  • policies for digital health, AI and UHC with the greatest potential to improve health and well-being, maximise health equity in resource-poor settings and ensure human rights.
  • the governance of digital health, AI and UHC, taking into account geopolitical, economic and social factors.

Digital Transformation for Health LAB (DTH LAB)
The DTH-LAB was established to follow up on the recommendations of the Lancet Commission.

The DTH-Lab’s work will focus on three priority areas:

  • Promoting digital first health systems that are co-designed and governed by young people, are responsive to their health needs, and strengthen digital health citizenship.
  • Providing governments, technology companies and other stakeholders with guidance on how to build a trusted and inclusive governance architecture based on data solidarity and Health for All values.
  • Generating evidence and engaging governments, technology companies, youth organisations and other key actors to address the digital determinants of health.
